Heroes Mending on the Fly Canada

About the Service

Heroes Mending on the Fly Canada (HMFC) is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and disabled veterans through fly fishing and associated activities including education and outings. We are serving military personnel who have been wounded, injured or disabled, to aid their physical and emotional recovery by introducing or rebuilding the skills of fly fishing and fly tying and by using and enjoying these skills on fishing outings and as lifelong recreation. Because the work with the participant is done on an outpatient basis, the program will use existing clubs, organizations and individuals in areas that have veterans who need what is offered through our programs. While emphasis is put on providing these activities to existing and retired members of the Canadian Armed Forces, participants from other organizations such as the RCMP, other Canadian Police Members, fire fighters and EMS personnel, who had previous military service with the regular or reserve forces, they will be included in the activities promoted by Heroes Mending on the Fly. The Program’s program provides basic fly fishing, fly casting and fly tying classes and clinics for the wounded and injured personnel ranging from beginners to those with prior fly fishing and tying skill who are adapting their skills to their new abilities. All activities and services are provided to the participants at no cost. The Program’s training and educational activities are designed to ignite or rekindle the participants’ appreciation and enthusiasm for a wide variety of fly fishing outings. While most of these fishing trips are conducted within a half-day’s travel from a hospital, the Project actively seeks opportunities to offer outings in quality fishing sites across the county. The trips near and far are provided at no cost to the participants. The Project relies on individual volunteers, and independent fly fishing clubs to conduct the program or at locations who is best suited to the outpatients and the endorsing clubs. The volunteer staff and outings leaders include professional educators and fishing guides as well as experienced fly fishers, all of whom donate their time and knowledge to endorse the program participants. Other volunteers help meet the educational, equipment, outings, training, and transportation needs. Heroes Mending on the Fly Canada, strives primarily to effectively serve the deserving past and present members of those covered by the Canadian Department of Veterans. Affairs who have made great sacrifices in the service of our country.
